Forewold III, Results of Research
(1) Estimating the market size of the prototyping industry
2,Extent of "outsourcing" by universities
We can assume that the main parts of the prototyping orders by universities are paid from the research budget of a science department such as Engineering, Medical, Pharmaceutical or Agricultural Studies, but there is no means available in the public domain to obtain the total amounts of these expenditures.
Thus, for this research by questionnaire we selected the top 50 schools in the order of size (enrollment) from the 250 four-year universities across the country that have science departments, and asked them about "research expense funded from the outside" such as scientific research funds, scholarship donations, contract research funds, joint research funds, etc., as well as the rough estimate of "outsourcing costs" that are assumed to become the subject as part of prototyping in the broad sense.
Judging from the results of the research by questionnaire, we can estimate the "research expense funded from the outside" of the top 50 schools, including the 25 universities that answered the questionnaire, to be approximately \330 billion.
Additionally, we calculate the ratio of outsourcing costs to research expense funded from the outside to be an average of approximately 5.1%.
Given the above, we can estimate the extent of outsourcing in the R&D expense of the top 50 universities with science departments to be approximately \16.9 billion.
Because this research was limited to the top schools in terms of enrollment, we tried to estimate the outsourcing costs for all universities in Japan by using the most current available national statistics.
According to the "Report of the Research on Science and Technology Studies" by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the "received research expense" from the outside funds by universities nationwide (including two-year colleges and research laboratories attached to universities) was approximately \451 billion in 2003. By applying the aforementioned outsourcing ratio (5.1%), we can estimate the outsourcing costs of all the universities with science department to be approximately \23 billion annually.

Note: "Approx." is omitted.
Note 1) While the research targets are universities with science departments, we looked for answers with externally funded research expenses for the entire university, either with or without a department of liberal arts or science.
