A) Research by questionnaire
In order to gather information about amounts of outsourced development work (outsourced portions of R&D expenses and equipment investment costs), current status of outsourcing, future outsourcing needs, etc., we conducted the following six types ofresearch by questionnaire:
  • Large companies (600 listed companies): Randomly picked from the 2,154 listed companies in the manufacturing sector of the "Quarterly Corporate Report (Kaisha Shikihou) 2003, Volume 4" issued by Toyo Keizai, Inc.
  • Research centers and laboratories (300 companies): Randomly picked from the"List of Research Centers and Testing Laboratories in Japan 2002-2003 Edition" (issued by Maruzen Co., Ltd.)
  • Venture companies (300 companies): Randomly picked from the companies nationwide certified under the New Company Creation Law (totaling 10,115 as of 7/31/03)
  • Universities (50): Top national, public and private universities with medical schools or departments of agriculture, science or engineering, in order of size (enrollment)
  • Public research centers and laboratories (10): Top organizations in order of size (R&D budget) selected from the "List of Research Centers and Testing Laboratories in Japan 2002-2003 Edition" (issued by Maruzen)
  • Distribution companies of consumer goods (50): Randomly picked from department stores (96) and nationwide chain stores (101) (as of July 2003).
B) Research by phone calls to other regions and clients
To gather information about the current situation of outsourcing and prototyping orders, future needs, related public policies, key fields of interest and corporate accumulation of prototyping expertise, we conducted research using phone calls to other regions and clients.

Cases in other regions
  • Prototyping groups in other regions (adhoc Kobe and Rodan 21)
  • Other regions that have already entered into the prototyping industry
(Ota ward, Tokyo, and Techno Foundation of Nagano Prefecture)
Clients
We conducted preliminary hearings on a few selected research targets of questionnaires.
  • University liaison organizations
(Ritsumeikan University and Kyoto Institute ofTechnology)
  • Large manufacturing companies and research centers
    (Rohm Co., Ltd., etc.)
