(2) Method of research
1,Target of research
Because the transactions between companies are becoming increasingly diverse, it is difficult to clearly sort out their unit orders for the process related to prototyping from other orders for outsourcing. Moreover, companies have different control systems.
Thus it is difficult to categorize "prototyping" and quantify its market size.
For the purpose of this research, we deemed "outsourced activities related to research, product planning and process development" as "prototyping" and set them as the target of this research.
"Outsourcing" may be done to reduce costs, speed up a process, utilize outside experts, adopt new skills or enhance internal resources, but it is mostly "procured from outside management resources." Specifically, it includes the activities listed on the following page.
2,Scope of research
In this research we covered large companies and major universities (with questionnaires and phone calls) nationwide in order to grasp the size of the national market for prototyping.
Because it is difficult to quantify the data obtained by the questionnaires on prototyping, given the afore-mentioned reasons, we gathered the data on "outsourcing of R&D, product development and equipment investment related to development" and estimated the market size, etc., for prototyping.
